I just finished a quick card design for Valentines's Day. This little cutie is from what I call my "starfish collection" .....I know, it has nothing to do with the ocean, but I have several little girls I have designed with funny little "star" shaped bodies. This redhead fits into that group. The original is created on coffee stained watercolor paper. I draw, color and paint to finish. The text is added in the print. Great card to send to someone you love......

I have a new change for 2012.... Andreatdesigns is now SouthEnd Girl art on ETSY.

{ My website is southend"girls" art because the other was taken, but this will do.}

Andreatdesigns was my ebay name WAY BACK when... so it was time to change. I have a new look in the shop so, check it out :)

I completed "Soul Flower" and I am pleased with the results. This was a totally new process for me, no collage and no print paper.....all paint all me. I love the bold color, it makes me feel like summer.

Work in PROGRESS......

Well, I am trying so hard to get back into art mode. The last time I finished a new painting was WAY back last September???? I think :(

I plan on taking an art class this winter, but in the mean time I thought I would work on something new.This idea came from a DIY art project I saw online, it involved melted crayons. I have that idea posted on one of my boards on the Pintrest.com site. (andreatdesigns is my username if you are interested)

I started with a sketch and moved it to a new style "wet media" canvas.

I'm totally into big curly afro style hair right now. I'm sure its because I'm so tired of looking at my flat straight hair.......but anyway....... next up-

I used watercolor and crayons to add flowers-

I wanted the

flowers to drip on the dress, as if it were raining flowers to color her gown.

My final plan was to finish it off by melting the crayons down the canvas.....Here is where my plan went wrong- I crushed the crayons and tossed them all over the painting, pulled out the hot air gun.....and YOU guessed it....I blew the crayons EVERYWHERE! No drips....plan failed.

I must tell you, I did this late in evening, I have a cold and I was a bit loopy on decongestant. This being said, my next move.....I grabbed the iron and began to melt the crayons all over the canvas. I'm reminded of a quote from my favorite fashion guru Tim Gunn

" I have made more mistakes at 3am than I care to remember"

The wax and the iron...BIG MISTAKE.

now what?

Do I toss the canvas in the garbage?

I left it. Got up today and thought I will "make it work" (another Tim Gunn quote)

I used a Martha Stewart trick and layed a piece of cloth over the worst areas and heated that iron back up. I ironed over a few areas to take up some of the wax. It helped a little. My next step will be more paint and maybe text.

I'm calling the one "Soul Flower"

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday! Last week I drove up to Southern Indiana, packed up my nieces and brought them back to my house for a few days of fun before driving back to Louisville for Christmas with our family. We baked cookies and went ice skating and watched alot of reality tv.

I'm still shopping instead of working!.....I love after Christmas shopping....it is my favorite time to shop!!! I'm shipping daily, its time to buy yourself a gift!

Mondate Morning update!

I can't believe the holidays are upon us.....this year has really flown by! Last year my resolution was to loose weight (like everyone) I started the year strong and lost 20 pounds by April. Then I went on vacation......and came home. I was tired of dieting and decided to just workout EXTRA hard.....I hurt my knee and was forced to lay around and eat.....well, I chose to eat :P ........I gained back 10lbs... UGH! Soooo, I'm back at it, again. I lost the 10 extra pounds this month, but I am stopped at "my wall". If you have ever tried to loose weight you know what the WALL is.....the number you can never get past .

I watch the Biggest Loser, which is so inspiring. I am lucky to have never faced a weight issue of that magnitude, and the fact that the contestants can wokout like an athlete gives me the courage to try to change my life style......so here I am at 43, learning to eat better and exercise. The eating better is a HUGE undertaking, I am the worlds most picky eater. I try, thats about all I can say. I eat the same stuff over and over and long for my fast food faves.

I did do something this past week that I am proud of... I went to an exercise class, by myself....all alone. I was nervous......more scared, I think. I thought if I went early in the morning the class would have more people my age there....WRONG. I read a bit about this new studio that had just opened, its called Pure Barre and it looked like something I could do. I went in for my free first time class, at first there was just two other people there, so I thought OK, I'll be fine. My first panic happened when I asked the girl next to me if she had done this class before. Her reply "no, I'm a dance instructor and I have been told by my athlete friends that this was the toughest workout they have ever endured" ......I screamed inside......as I was looking for the exit, the rest of the sorority of sexy fit 20 somethings piled in and music started. Here I was STUCK in a room full of fit, hot looking, young girls in tight workout gear. I was wearing loose fitting grey sweats....hoping my ass was covered.....need I say more?

I did get through all 55 minutes of this painful, lift, tighten and tone class. I think I'm going back. I also think I'm going to try hot yoga....a funny thing happens when you try something new and succeed, you feel the desire to try some else new. This years resolution will be to step outside of my comfort zone. Try something new every month.

Now back to art. Sorry you had to hear my personal drama, it does relate, trying something new is how I ended up here, working as an artist........following my passion. I think everyone should make a list of the little things they have always desired to do, like a bucket list, but of smaller things that you can easily accomplish once a week or a month...whatever time and life will allow. A million little things can make up one BIG life.

Now for art----- This is my latest angel. She is TALL. 8x36

I pieced her together on a long wood plank. Distressed with walnut stain, She is painted in weathered aqua/blue and unbleached titanium. LOVE her, this is one of my favorites.

Hope is the thing with feathers-

A few months ago I created a large piece inspired by one of my favorite birds, a peacock. This painting is also inspired by another favorite of mine.....an owl. I pictured a little girl who loves owls so much, that she dreams of sitting right up in the trees with her feathered friends.
Created in fall colors, with snippets of papers and vintage books, she is perched in the trees. I also added a bit of a poem from Emily Dickenson. Look close...you will see her friends sitting next to her.

Art Off Pike 2011--- the review

--CAUTION--- I ramble in this post..not happy today.

This was my first time at Art Off Pike in Covington. The day started off with a short drive into downtown Covington. We arrived at my booth space, which was occupied with a van being unloaded, I unloaded on the sidewalk waiting for him move....when he was finished we pulled out the tent, started to set up, when in pulls another van......seriously? Are we invisible??? This person felt like she was too good to walk across the lot, like rest of us. She was nasty and rude to me....this is how my day started off, being bullied by my neighbor artist.....nice.

The rest of the day followed suit.....a kid stopped behind my tent to puke..... a bag lady strolled by....Did I mention the alley full of garbage cans behind me???? How could I forget? We enjoyed the wonderful aroma of sewage drain and garbage throughout the day....Yes, I paid to set up here. ugh.

The crowd seemed to be lookers not buyers. The show volunteers were great, the art was really top notch. I wish I could have shopped, but with low sales, that is not an option. Most of the other artist I spoke with were not happy with the sales. Weather was perfect. It was just one of those shows. Live and learn......(and take notes)

I want to thank everyone that came out this past weekend to Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park. I had a beautiful weekend and a wonderful time! Thank you so much for supporting local art. The art show was full of fabulous things, I even came home with a print from another artist! I love to collect local art from everywhere I go! I will show it off after I have it framed.

Here are a few images from my booth.....my candy helped distract little hands from grabbing the pendants!

I sold many originals. Thank you again! Someone asked me if it is hard to let them go. Honestly.....sometimes it is. When you put your heart and soul into a creation it is hard to let it go. On the other hand, knowing I created something that makes another person over joyed to bring it home, gives me a happiness that is really hard to describe. If you are an artist, you know what I mean ;)

Not only is my life full of little girls but my family LOVES our furbabies. I am working on my latest artistic endeavour.........all about the love of animals. { The post below is the card I created for a rescue.}

My next design was created of my new puppy. I take a digital picture, add a little photoshop.....paint...collage paper.....ink.....distress....MORE paint.....

Several layers of print paper....and more paint.... DONE!

This was created on an 8x10 canvas board.

My vision is to create a full series of dog breeds, cats and rescue inspired pieces. I may take custom orders, contact me for more info. I'm looking for great pet pictures to use in this project. The best pics are close up, color and of your pet only. I would like your permission to use the photo, so please don't send copyrighted professional photos (unless you are the photographer). The above was an iphone shot. If I use your photo to include in my series I will send you a free mini print and you will have the opportunity to purchase the original.

I have been busy with puppy care all week. This is my latest creation. My hope is to create an entire line of dog and cat pieces to help with rescue. This is the first piece. Cards are also available with all proceeds going directly to my furbabies rescue organization.

My work this summer---

I have been working most of the summer on a collaboration of sorts with writer Lisa Engelhardt. Together we have created a line of angels that will be produced and manufactured by Christian Gifts of Faith. These angels will be sold to retailers nationwide this fall. We are so excited, and eagerly awaiting our product samples. The end product is still a secret......but I can promise you this, our little creations will be wonderful gifts to all of those people in your life who you love.

I have 6 new angels that were created just for this new gift line. Here is a sneak peek, of one of the angels with words by Lisa.

Busy busy week! We have our new furbaby here! Everyone is learning to get along :) Dixie is happy to play all day with her new friend. The puppy play is extremely entertaining! We named him Quincy Brown.....but Big Brown is what we keep calling him. Sound familiar?

2008 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner

Our Big Brown weighs about a pound and half, but he is just as mighty.

I hate to sound like a broken record......but here it goes. This 12 week old PURE BRED chocolate toy poodle was dumped at our local animal shelter. Someone purchased him from a puppy mill/ puppy profiteer and changed their mind. The jerk that took him in to the shelter said he is sick. Which means they will euthanize him immediately, not bother to find him a home. My friend and "animal angel" rescuer was at the shelter collecting 29 full grown hurting and mistreated boxers that were seized from another puppy mill roundup. She was there to save them from termination and took this puppy too. Big Brown has kennel cough, a simple antibiotic treatable illness, no need to die.

Bottom line we need laws to stop the PUPPY MILLS. Breeders need to be licenced and inspected yearly. If you are reputable, you need to be willing to follow laws. If you want to make as much money as you can abusing and neglecting innocent creatures then I hope there is a spot for you in hell.

I'm melting............not just the heat...my heart

Monday Morning update. Its July. Its HOT. Need I say more?

The heatwave is still going strong here in Kentucky. I have been on inside lockdown (feels like) all month.........sales are slow.......so I spend my time on online.......surfing the web........in search of love................NO! not that kind of love!!! get your mind out of the gutter!

I think my Shih Tzu needs a sister....someone her size to play with, because my border collie is just not up to the task of running endless circles and tossing around a well loved cheeta toy. So my journey starts with local rescues.

Saturday, we went to an event at our dog park, got a few leads and started looking around. Dixie had fun sniffing.....sniffing....sniffing....and she seemed to enjoy meeting a few friends her size......sooooo.....now I'm on a mission to save another soul. I started looking for a mix malti-shihtzu-poodle...something like that.....when I ran into the angel that saved my Dixie.

Dixie loves to sniff my iphone.

Dixie was fearful, skinny and kinda aggressive when she came to my house, but two years later she is fun loving, healthy and in general nice (unless your a cat.....but that is a whole other issue). She is my buddy all day, a rarely leaves my side......unless the feline gang decides its a good day to taunt the tiny dog.......then the chasing starts......yes, my house is a playground for pets.

Now back to Dixie's rescuer, she suggests a little boy-

I don't know many details, I still need to meet him......well, Dixie needs to meet him.....and then I have to convince my husband that this will work....I have time for all three.....dogs under 10 pounds are like half a dog....so it won't be that big of a deal.....they will play together......yadda yadda yadda.......

He has an adoption fee, so I am out to prove I can find the extra money.

I will keep you posted on my search for another furbaby, but I also want to stress the need to stop purchasing puppies from pet stores, and unreputable breeders, newspaper adds etc. We need to stop puppy mills. Go online, find the breed you want from a rescue, call your local animal shelter, there are wonderful dogs waiting for a home. My border collies both came from the animal shelter, they are the best. So many hearts in need <3

Animals can bring us great joy and an abundance if inspiration. Just like my love for birds, animal print is always a fabulous spring board of creativity. This week I created my tribute to Zuri.....of course in a fashionable way :)

This is my card print version. I like to create a version that can be used on cards. I will digitally add the text and create a print to mount on 5x7 cards. Perfect to frame, and send.

The original is still in the works. I stopped here to photograph for the card, but will continue to work on this until I have a piece that is hang ready.

I also want to point out this was adapted from a project in Julie Nutting's book Collage Couture. Great book, I highly recommend!

I also added text to my peacock piece, but you will need to stay turned for that one! I'm creating a themed card set, so check back!

One of my favorite birds. The majestic beauty of these enchanting creatures captivate me. I'm surprised of the popularity of owls, they seem boring in comparison, but are still interesting in their own right......but my favorite.....the peacock!

I love the colors. Jewel tones. Deep teal, blue, gold and a touch of tangerine. Perfect for a gala....a gown.....a show stopping dress.

I created the peacock in watercolor, as well as the bodice of the dress. From there, the "tail" was pieced in print paper, and painted again. The background is layer on layer of different paints and textures.

I sprayed additional tail feathers, to give this an ethereal look.

Quick post- I just finished 5 new 6x8 art pieces. Two were listed in my ETSY shop and three more will be listed tomorrow. This piece was started when Somerset Studio had an art call for favorite book themes. I was busy and just could not finish it. I love Jane Austin, one of favorite movies is Pride and Prejudice. My favorite scene, the morning sunrise and the silhouette of Mr Darcy walking across the field.

Quick update! I had a hot rainy day at the Village Green ARt show in Fairfield OH Saturday. This was the first art show of the year for me, and it was great despite the rain. The location was beautiful, the volunteers were fantastic and the art was FAB! I'm not just saying this because I won best in show-fine art (omg!) and they gave me a blue ribbon and prize. I sold a couple of originals and lots of pendants, so I am in the process of pulling items from both stores. As soon as I get a supply order in I will update my shops. If you had your eye on one of my new pendants and now its gone, just contact me and I will add to my list of re- makes.
I took a jewelry class last week, so look for new ~one of kind~ styles!

Happy Memorial Day everyone! I want to take a minute to thank all the brave women and men who have served our country and are currently serving our country, because of you we all sleep sound at night.

UP NEXT!
My latest creation- This painting was inspired by American artist Charley Harper. One of my favorite artists. The piece that gave me my inspiration was "Foxsimiles" which is featured in his 2011 calender. It is a fun little foxy piece.....so.....I wanted to do something with a fox.

I still have a few table top panels that I am currently recycling. The panel started black, so I built paint and paper around the dark finish that was already there. My finished piece is about 18x17 inches. There is a groove around the top and wide black sides.

The fox tail is pieced with hundreds of tiny shreds, each perfectly placed to create a colorful fox tail. This classy lady prefers a night on the town with her clever fox draped beautifully around her neck, instead of a pooch in her purse :)

My ETSY jewelry shop is open and new items are listed! I have a few earrings and new pendants! I love how earrings turned out......so cute! I only have a couple left, I will try to get more in soon.

This is has been a busy week! I came back from vacation full of energy and ideas. First up....new paintings in coffee and tea!! it's mixed media....what can I say? I have been working in watercolor on 140lb cold press paper. I created 4 mini pieces (6x8) that have been stained with coffee and tea. I created the painting around the stain and added collage papers. I love the natural feel it creates. Two pieces are botanical and coordinate with the garden angel pieces.
The top left, will have a bible verse. That one is still in progress. I took the images and created mini prints for pendants. My pendants sell great locally, so... I opened a new ETSY store to list my jewelry in under my SouthEnd Girls name--SouthEndgirlsART.ETSY.com

I need to improve my photography skills, that is my main concern with listing the jewelry. Keep checking in, my pics can only get better from here:)

This group are pendants under a glass tile and set in a tray. I added the ballchain, but you can slide the pendant on to your preferred chain, ribbon or choker.

Monday Morning update

Good morning everyone! I'm back from Florida and already missing the sunshine. I spent the week walking the beach and reading by the ocean. I visited the National Seashore in Pensacola, ate way too much and spotted a few Blue Angels flying over the ocean. I gathered up all shells and inspiration I could find and headed back home. I am working on a large mermaid.....more to come :)

and I will be sitting on the beach.....watching for dolphins and hoping to see a mermaid. This little mermaid was created on watercolor paper. I used watercolor pencils and added a bit of collage and glitter.

My ETSY shop will go on vacation mode Saturday afternoon. I will re-open around the 23rd. I will ship everyday til then.......:)

Derby Week in KY

Its Derby week here in Kentucky! All the ladies are choosing their hats! The weather is terrible, non stop rain. Hopefully Saturday will be sunny for the running of the roses :) No new art from me. This lady was created last spring.
I'm still on the organic kick. I miss my fast food.......I really miss pizza. I'm trying to come up with an organic version....that I like. I tried the take home pizza from Wholefoods.... not winning with that one.

I hit the dvr last night and slept in til 8, but first thing this morning I watched the wedding. Beautiful.

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. I live in Northern Kentucky, about 30 minutes from the site chosen to re- create a life size Noah's ark. This will be part of the Creation Museum. They picked a great spot, it has been raining here for a month...... no end in site, floods everywhere. yuck.

[Just a note: I added a link to the website of the Creation Museum, if you are interested in this little fact about NKY, I have never been there, and really have no knowledge of their practice or teachings. I am not promoting their site]

I started the month moving to an organic diet, I will finish about 4 pounds lighter (yeah!) and 3 inches of bloat gone from my waistline. Yesterday my Wii told me (for the FIRST time) I have a "normal" BMI. Believe me, I gave Jesus a ton of extra praise on Easter Sunday. All of this dieting and exhausting exercise is starting to work. I have more to go....but the joy of a small accomplishment goes a L O N G way :)

For Easter I fixed a spring salad to take to my moms. I started with organic dark leafy green lettuce, added organic baby spinach and fresh organic strawberries. I made my own dressing-
1 cup of orange juice
1 fresh avocado
3 green onions
pureed
{I found this recipe on the Wholefoods website and tweaked it a bit}

I thought I took a photo, I guess I didn't. I will next time. I wanted to show the kids, that even grown ups can try something new. Healthy is not a bad thing......just different. Thank you to my mother, who got out her bag of pre-packaged iceberg lettuce, dumped ranch dressing and croutons all over it, and acted like I was trying to poison everyone. :O)

Life is a Journey

Another large piece created on a re-purposed panel. This is part of a series of girls in ball gowns. The dress is pieced with a variety of collage papers. The background is warm gold and rust. I stamped "Life is a journey" with vintage stamps. Displayed in my studio. It is dark and stormy here, so I will wait to photograph. Hopefully I will have better pictures in the next few days.

My New Year resolution was (like almost everyone) to loose weight. I am happy to say I have stuck with it, to date I have lost 20 pounds by exercising and cutting my calories to 1200. I still have 15 pounds to go, but what I care more about is just being healthy. I have no desire to wear a size 0, but I do desire a lean and tone body. I was so tired of feeling tired and weak. Someone posted a message on Facebook about the movie Food Inc. I watched it....knowing I would not be happy with what I learned. I have been well aware of the inhumane animal slaughter, but what really shocked me was the chemical meat wash, and nearly EVERYTHING in the supermarket is made from corn. Really??? I am seriously in the dark, but not any more. I am going to take charge of my eating. My husband is going to document our journey on his blog. I have a copy of today's entry below. He is in the health insurance industry, so it directly relates to his business. One more thing about me, I am the worlds most picky eater. I will not eat vegetables and rarely eat fruit. This week I tried my first salad (no dressing....I have an issue with vinegar and mayo.....long story) I added fruit to it and did eat it. My main eating this week have been the green smoothies made with fruit and spinach. Amish Chicken and grass fed beef. Its baby steps for me, but NO FAST FOOD

The big switch - Going organic

People ask me all the time about how can I lower my healthcare premiums. Generally, it has to do to with pool of members who are filling claims at doctors and hospitals. Alot of people in these pools are sick or have height and weight issues. Some are healthy. The fact is as people get sicker in this country the rates of premiums are going to continue rise. They've already risen some 70% since 2004. This will be the same even with the new healthcare reform. The government will adjust their rates accordingly as long as obesity rates continue to rise. There is an alternative for decreasing these costs in those pools and reducing health costs overall -which is changing the mindset of the food we're eating. I decided to try to change this mindself for myself. So I decided to make the big switch - Go organic and blog it for six months and see if some of you will follow the lead.

I, like many other people, eat fast food quite a bit. So it's a huge challenge for me and fortunately I was never a big person. However, I've had stomach and digestive problems in the past so there is some incentive for me to make a change. For others, the numbers are staggering. 1 in 3 children in American are likely to get diabetes. The obesity problem in America is frightening and continous to get worse which contributes to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stroke and many forms of cancers. A high fat diet combined with the food industries chemical injections in our food is a disaster to all of us.

So my wife and I decided to design a strategy going into this organic diet. We decided to take small steps and incorporate organic items into our daily life. The first thing was to check out the farmer's market . The closest one we had was in Cincinnati. We also shopped at a whole foods market as well. Some of the Kroger superstores had some organic items. The strategy all along was to basically to switch to things we like to eat and change it to organic at the same time become price conscious.

Keep in mind in this process there would be several things we wouldn't like right away. However there were some things we did like- potato chips and popcorn- this was an easy one. Barbecue Popchips brand were delicious. The cost was about 50 cents more than a bag of ruffles.

But there should be main priorities going organic in the very beginning. One is the food category

1.) Switching from grain or corn fed beef to grass fed beef - What's the difference?- Well many cuts of grass fed beef have 1/2 the fat of corn fed beef, less saturated fats and more omega 3s, so if you're eating lean, grass-fed is a good way to go. Btw, it tastes better too.

2.) Switching from caged chicken to free range chicken -

Although caged chickens are heavily monitored by scientists, eating meat or eggs from free range chickens causes people to have more health benefits because they are not fed pesticide covered food, they are less likely to carry diseases and are full of natural nutrients.(More to come on this issue in following blogs)

3.) Eating green vegetables (not iceberg lettuce) with meals regularly can have many health benefits. They are one of the most natural foods and contain different vitamins, minerals and thousands of other plant chemicals known to provide health benefits. Along with all the many disease-reducing benefits, eating vegetables can also help control weight. My wife doesn't like vegetables at all so she'll make smoothies and include baby spinach in them. (I'll have her recipes up here soon. They're fantastic)

Second is the budget category.

1.) Trying to not spend $50 more than what you would spend at the grocery.

**Keep in mind the money you're spending at fast food restaurants will negate the 50 bucks in a week.

Third is the tasty meal category.

All three of these categories are important because your goal has to be to become healthier; being able to afford to stay healthy and enjoying the meals that are making you healthy.

Each week I'll post results of the experiment. How it affects my health and budget. In addition, to posting some recipes and food choices I think are delicious and a good alternative to fast food and processed food.

Week 1 - I can tell you right away I already feel better and have more energy by going to this organic diet.

For lunch on the first day:

Don Pablo's sounded great today for lunch but instead I ate at the Wholefood store cafe while I was shopping and enjoyed a Turkey pesto sandwich for $6.99 - it was delicious. Pablo's would've cost the same. The sandwich was fresh and the tomatoes were organic. This is not the same as a sandwich at your local grocery - they use processed meat; high fat dressing or mayo and it's not generally fresh or chemically clean. So, will have to find the recipe for the sandwich. It was awesome. Point here is try to find an alternative to high fat content foods.

For dinner we had fresh range chicken fajitas. We bought the chicken at whole foods but my wife and I discovered it is much cheaper to get fresh chicken at the farmer's market as well at the butcher shop. We bought four huge chicken breasts for about $10 bucks and it will last a while. (We froze alot of it for later meals in the week.)

For a good seasoning on the chicken fajitas use my wife's recipe:

2 tsp chili powder

1 tsp ground coumin

1 tsp minced garlic

1/2 tsp oregano leaves

1/2 tsp crushed red pepper (optional)

Use baby spinach ($2 for a huge bag at farmer's market versus $3.99 at whole foods in a smaller container) in the fajitas. Use Drew's organic buttermilk ranch. (not cheap at $4.99 but it was the best ranch dressing I've ever tasted) and organic wheat tortillas. Use organic tomatoes as well. Grill your fajitas in a wok if you can't get outside and mix them with organic green peppers and onions. ( large green pepper at farmer's market was 50 cents)

Spent $104.00 at wholefoods market - not much lunch items unfortunately. mainly dinner portions and some very good cereals for breakfast. although instead of going out to eat we did buy two grass fed steaks which were $20 bucks - not bad.

Spent $15.00 at farmers market - have a ton of greens and lettuce. Don't know yet how to use all of it.

Stay tuned. The big issue now is not the dinner's or breakfast, but fixing lunches on daily basis without starving. Stay tuned.

Good Morning!
Tomorrow is April first and I hope Mother nature will stop her winter rage on us. It was blowing snow yesterday and COLD!!! The Cincinnati Reds open today and is too cold for us to go to the opening day parade :( I could bundle up... but what fun is that??? I guess the groundhog was wrong.....it is STILL winter! "Morning Song"

A couple of weeks ago a friend gave me a tip on some panels she had found on clearance in a decorator store. These were originally manufactured as tops to add to the top of a file cabinet in order to create a desk. They were being discontinued and were headed for the dumpster, unless someone could come up with a use for them. She thought they would be great to paint and use as wall art. So off I headed to find me a bargain and save the planet a little less in a landfill :) (these were far from landfill ready......new in the box actually.....anyway......in the name of art)

Well, the are a great size for a wall. 17.5x20.5

The only problem I have had is the weight. They weigh 7pounds before I pack them back in their box. So shipping is going to be high, with that being said, the three I have completed will more than likely stay here in local galleries. The first three are going to Creative Hands in Bellevue KY. I am the April featured artist, you can see all my new spring pieces on Friday April 1st for the first Friday shop.

I just finished 5 new little paintings! These are all 6x8 on wood. I tried a different style face, I wanted this group to look a bit more "child" like. I used Tim Holtz tissue tape on the sides and LOVE the results! I think it really finished off the piece perfectly! This is a large piece completed this week. I will list in my etsy shop today, but it may go to a local gallery soon. If you are interested, please let me know. I will reserve it for you.

Next up----I am working on a few small pieces. These are 6x8 wood. They are in process on my table. I am trying out a new "doll" face style. They have larger eyes, tiny little pout lips and a fuller face. I wanted some
thing to look a bit child like. I feel the need for summer, so all three are summer themes. They still need a few more elements, like buttons and bees :)
I have a mermaid, little swimmer and a little girl who must have a bee in her bonnet! I will try to get these listed by this weekend. Feel free to email me if you want to claim them early :)

Inspiring designs

Have you seen this website? Magnolia Pearl {the image is from the site} I came across these incredible designs a few weeks ago. When the days are gloomy with no end in site I have a tendency to go search for my inspiration. That journey led me to these modern prairie girls. The beautiful images give me dreams of warm flowering fields, surrounding an old farm house. The clothes are beautiful, they remind me of old lace curtains and tablecloths. I imagine these blowing in a gentle breeze, smelling oh so sweet..... hanging on the line to dry.

Sun Salutation

Breathe deep.....and raise your arms to the sun. Just a reminder to slow down and take a breath. My latest painting. I finished this a few days ago and needed to wait for the sun to photograph :) She measures 11x14, on wood. Bright and cheery......ready for spring.

Shop update!

This week I wanted to try a few more mini pieces before I move on to the large wood panels I am working on. Yesterday I finished 5 itty bitty petite 4x4 wood panels. I won't lie they were a bit challenging. I have 4 girls and a poppy piece. I have these listed already in my ETSY shop- Click here to check them out.
They will be great as a grouping or really just one sitting on a shelf is too cute. They are limited to one of a kind....no prints will be made (too small) or repeats......due to the tedious nature of these little cuties :P
I listed them at a low price. PERFECT for an Easter basket stuffer.......right next to the peeps :)

Poppy Dreams

Just a quick update. I have 7 paintings I'm working on... .......I ran out of supplies for the first 5 and decided to finish these two wood pieces today, while waiting for my art shipment. I wanted to get these photographed before the sun goes away. We are expecting another round of bad weather in the next few days......so here they are:)

I used a layering of paint technique and SPRAY paint!! I love the effect. I collaged over the backgrounds on both pieces and added stamping and buttons. They will look great together or apart. Created on 6x12 birch, the hanger is already on the back. Sides are natural, the colors are cream, rust and soft blue with pops of poppy red. Just finished. I have been working on this piece for a while. I started yoga this year, part of my new years resolution. I also have been on a low calorie diet + more treadmill than ever before. I am on day 53, lost 10lbs......still more to go. As I wait for the warmth of summer, I painted a little fairy to remind me to breathe......sounds easy, but if you practice yoga, then you know what it means :)

In case you haven't noticed, I'm in love with crazy curly hair at the moment. Here, I have another girl with some fab 70's curly fro style hair. I sketched her couple of weeks ago and just now got around to adding her into my paintings, you may see her again, but for now this is it :)

This piece is 12x12 wood panel. I layered acrylic, in some of my favorite sun drenched colors. The flowers are a combination of watercolor and ink with bits of collage. Her dress is covered in vintage doilie. I used my favorite stamp from Unity and Donna Downey for the quote. There are links to both a few entries down.

I really want to keep this one, but my walls are covered. I think this would be a great gift for yourself, a grad or a very special girl. Great size for hanging. Click here for listing

Perfect to frame and sit on a shelf or desk.......or even create a grouping for a wall. I have a limited number and they are ready to ship. no no no not the Michael Scott joke!

I came across a great set of word stamps called "She said" a few weeks ago. This set was created by Donna Downey for Unity. My first thought was, I have to have these....they are a perfect fit with my art girls........so here they are!! I worked on this group all week, they are 6x6 on wood. I painted, and collaged my girls and stamped the words on each one. They would make a great girly gift for a graduation, birthday or any day. The words are inspiring and powerful. I gave them each a name so I could keep track of them. The group is cute together, but each one is unique and would look perfect alone too. These are listed in my ETSY store. Happy Valentines Day! a little late

We celebrated Valentines Day all weekend, so today its back to work. I sold my biggest painting this past weekend, I am so happy it is going to Australia. I have sent so many paintings down under, I feel like part of my family resides there....:)))

I finished this shortly after Christmas, it is a 12x12 hard canvas. I created this one to enter in a themed contest.....sadly it did not win or place :(

The name is "Dream Street" ......She dreams of living by the sea in a little cottage. This piece contains vintage maps and doilies. Lots of print papers and buttons. A little lady who is lost in a breezy day dream. I have the original here. I also have a print snippet created into a pendant here.

I get emails from artfairinsiders.com, today I read an entry from artist/blogger Patricia Hecker. She creates the most exquisite wood boxes, see them here in her shop TattooDreams . I wanted to share with you her words-

Why would you buy this from me? I can tell you all kinds of facts about how it was made, who made it, the size, the color - buy why would you buy this? Why would you spend $55.00 for a box? $800.00 for a painting?

Financial/practical folks would say "Do you want it or do you need it?"
Of course you don't need it.
You buy art because you want it.

Will it improve your life? Debatable.
If smiling when you see this object counts, then 'yes'.
If feeling that you have helped contribute to the life of an independent artist to continue living their creative life makes you feel good, then
'yes'.
If surrounding oneself with unusual one of a kind treasures makes you feel
like you're creating a personalized pod to live in, then 'yes'.
If by owning this, you vicariously are living with a piece of this artists spirit in your home or office - then 'yes'.
Pretty compelling reasons I would have to say. Then again, I'm the artist who wants you to buy my work!

So - if this is the case.....think about these things the next time you hesitate. The next time you think,"should I buy that beautiful work of art that seems to be tugging at my soul".......just say 'yes'.

There is no right or wrong in buying art.
Buy what you love.
Buy what ignites your spirit.
Buy what makes you feel whole.
Buy what makes you miss a breath.
In becoming attuned to your inner voice, you come to count on it's intuitive input
when you need the push to say 'yes'!

As 2011 unfolds, make it point to buy at least ONE handmade piece of art each month.
At the end of the year, your collection will have grown,
your sense of collecting strengthened -
your passion expanded.
You will have grown too!
You may find yourself smiling more.
You may find yourself showing others your collection - having people into your home.

I started this year off with purchasing a piece of art from ETSY. It was a very small investment, but I wanted to support other artists, they way people support my art. I know the economy still sucks, I feel it every time I sit all day at an art fair or check my email for online sales. I contemplate every day, should I put this all on hold and go back out in the "real world" and get a job.....or wait in faith that this is the right path. I think Patricia has it right, I want people to buy art because it will make them feel something....I buy art because it makes me feel happy. I want to look at the creation and know a kindred spirit created this to pass on the joy. I will continue this year with a purchase a month.....something tiny, just a little reminder for me to see every day and know that someone else out there is working with me.

I'm going to dye my hair blue.....

Well...the weather is keeping me away from my scheduled art show. I hate to miss a chance to get my art out in the community, but the location is over an hour away ...... the snow and ice is really harsh. I decided to stay home........... ANYWAY...I created a cute little grouping of 6x6 mini art collages. These were going with me, but now they are on ETSY! LOW price and too cute! I have them sitting on my shelf, but they are just as cute hanging up, or sitting on a table. My favorite is the girl with blue hair :)

Happy Day Everyone! I'm up early, so I thought I would blog a little this morning. I wanted to take a minute to thank everyone who has supported me....by supporting my art. This is my full time job, I feel comfortable with saying that now. I have managed to work at home now for two years, it would not be possible without the many people who support my Etsy shop, and now my online shop. I also have a big supporter right here at home ;0).....he has my back, when things are slow.

First up......Valentines CARDS!!! these turned out soo cute, but I only have a few. This is my new 2011 Queen of Hearts- Cards are high gloss, blank back (tiny logo on bottom of back) I am selling these in sets of 6 ($1 each....wow....great deal) perfect to send to your loved ones:) Just a heads up to card club members...this is the February design, your club cards will be the usual 5x7 version, not the postcard. This will be a really quick update! I tried to get here last week, but I have been soooo busy! First- ETSY update, I added three of these adorable necklaces. I started with several but when I showed a sneak peek on facebook, few got snatched up! My photo skills are poor, but trust me....these are too cute! I have experimented with jewelry making in the past, but this time I love the results. They are cropped images set under glass and then glued into a silver tray. I add a little gift tin, perfect for storage or gift giving! They are in my ETSY store.

Monday Morning Update!

I hope everyone had a wonderful new year! All of this weekends sales have shipped including the card club. New card is posted to the right. Memberships are now closed until next season. I have set my art goals and I am ready to start the new year!

I created a new Frida this past weekend.... In honor of a new creative year :) She has her paint brushes stuck in her hair....which is a popular hair style for myself ....on just about any given day :)

My sister-in-law gave me a Susan Boyle cd for Christmas, it was accompanied by a letter explaining her choice. She said, if a woman over the age of 50 can find her voice and have the courage to share it with the world, then she... being a woman over the age of 50 would support her and purchase it (and pass it on to me.) She ended her letter with a quote "find creativity at any age" This has really resonated with me, she is right. After high school I put away my "paint" I was nearly 40 years old before I found my way back. You can find your creativity at any age.

Eula's Treasure

I wanted to take a minute to share with you a painting I created this season. This is a large (one of the biggest I've ever done) 18x24 wood panel. It is entitled "Eula's Treasure".

This was created to honor my grandmother. We lost her a few years ago, but her memory is very strong in our family of women. She loved to garden, and the flowers she cultivated were a joy to see every spring. Among her many favorites were irises. If you look close you can see I added a few irises among the bounty of magnolias (I think that is what they are.....I did not get the gardener gene). Across her wings are the words " In the spring when the irises bloom I feel the warmth of her smile upon me" This is a line from a poem my sister wrote about her. I did a few new techniques on this one, including spray paint over some snips of my dried out shrubs and a tissue paper dress. This was gift to my mom for Christmas.

My card club will get to see a mini crop photo shop version of this painting. It will be January's club only card. I will post it here on New Years Day.

Prints will be available after the new year.

I hope you all had a happy holiday, we had a quiet one at home. We visited family the weekend before and stayed home to watch the snow fall. We also had a little movie marathon..... Lil Fockers on Christmas eve and Black Swan on Christmas night night. Now back to work :)

Warm Wishes!

I am snowed in, so what better way to celebrate winter than with a new painting? "Snow Angel"

This glistening beauty measures 16x18 and was created on wood panel. She is wrapping her winter arms around a tiny village. Sparkling snow dances in the air and glass glitter adorn her hair. I photo layered this print and added text to create a card. The original is full of tissue texture, glass glitter, stickles and metallic paints. She will join me at Artfest at Icefest this January in Hamilton OH.

If you are an ice queen fanatic like me and are interested in the original, feel free to contact me for a price on the painting. Prints will be offered late in January.

This morning I received an email from a customer asking for a print to be framed. I just happened to have a framed print left from a recent art market, I generally never list a framed print. Why am I telling you this? because it never hurts to ask! If you are looking for something to give that special person and do not see it in my shop, just ask! I have a variety of items that I take to local markets and never list in my stores. I have a few ornaments, cosmetic bags and a variety of print sizes left. What are you interested in?......just ask!

Snowy Sunday

Good morning! We had a nice time at the event in Covington last night. I came home in the rain, but found a few awesome online sales took place while I was out, so that makes the night a success. My next show is in January, ARTFEST at IceFEST. I am working on new pieces for this show. This is a peek at a new painting. It measures 14x18 on cradled wood. She is nameless right now.

I have learned a lesson and I will pass it on. When someone you really do not know, but you thought was a genuine person.....gives you a suggestion that starts with, "I tried this and failed miserably....." be wary of taking that suggestion. When you make it successful, by giving it your own spin...they will call you a thief.
